Across the Spider-Versehas been deemed as one of the best Spider-man sequels so far. The animated blockbuster is the sequel to the Academy Award-winningSpider-Man: Into The Spider-Verseand has been wreaking havoc on the big screens – thanks to its genius storyline, iconic music, and out-of-this-world animation.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Versefeatures many unusual things, the most being a very unlikely antagonist, The Spot. Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, the character was considered dorky, unable to be considered the main antagonist but was nonetheless made one.

How Did The Spot BecomeAcross The Spider-Verse’sMain Villain

Regarded as dorky and lonely, no one would have considered Spot to be a main antagonist, however, the makers had other plans. In a recent interview withCollider, the movie’s creators Chris Miller andPhil Lordrevealed how Spot came about and their intention to make him the main villain. Revealing that they initially had another antagonist, Lord said,
“Well, at one point, we did have a second antagonist that was kind of facilitating and magnifying Spot’s dilemma, and ultimately, it just was too far afield from the story.”
Adding on they continued that having another antagonist would have taken the spotlight away from Miles and Gwen, which would have made it less interesting. Despite their doubts, they made the choice of making Spot the most unlikely yet badass villain.
“But what was interesting was, we were like, ‘Can we pull off making Spot a formidable foe?’ And it wasn’t really until all the animation and the lighting came in for his full transformation that we were like, ‘Oh yeah, this is gonna work. This is even better than what we were hoping for.’”
Despite of all the opposition and doubts, Spot became one of the coolest, most powerful, and most formidable foes.

Spot Wasn’t There In The Initial Storyline
Spider-Man has scores of really badass villains. From Green Goblin to Venom, the web-shooter has to make his way through quite powerful beings to save the world. But this time, in the recently releasedSpider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,Spider-Man has to fight a very unusual super-villain, The Spot.
The movie’s creatorsChris Millerand Phil Lord revealed how Spot came about,
“And there’s a lot, the story evolved a lot. The character set and the journey that Miles goes on, the specifics, the villain itself, Spot, wasn’t where we started, but it was something that (producer) Avi Arad actually pitched us, and we’re like, ‘The Spot? That’s the dorkiest, dumbest villain…’”
Miller explained howAvi Aradconvinced them, saying Spot is the coolest villain with the coolest superpowers,
“‘You know, people don’t realize how powerful he is,’ and then we came back around going, ‘Oh yeah, people don’t realize how powerful he is!’ And obviously, the fact that he has these portals was relevant, and we’re like, ‘Well, wouldn’t it be interesting to take a person who is overlooked as dumb, and feels left out and lonely, and wants to prove themselves? The same arc that Miles is going on, but the dark version of it.’”
Thankfully, the two decided to accept Arad’s pleas, making him Spider-Man’s coolest antagonist so far.
