Often, there are talks of method acting when talking about some of the most exceptional performances in the film industry. This is a very demanding and dedicated form of acting that only a few veterans can adhere to, one of them being none other than Christian Bale himself. Throughout his career, he has managed to give some exceptional performances through this technique.

And over the course of more than two decades, there has been not a single one of his performances that has not been praised by critics and the audience alike. Therefore, while most might imagine that the star does this because he considers it fun, the star chose method acting because he felt his performances were inferior.
Christian Bale Chose Method Acting Because He Felt Inferior As An Actor
Known as probably one of the most intense and taxing forms of acting in every aspect, the art of method acting is not everyone’s cup of tea in the film business. But somehow,Christian Balemakes it look like it’s second nature to him because, after all these years, it might’ve developed into one. Popular for his performance as Bruce Wayne fromThe Dark Knighttrilogy, the star has an uncanny ability to inhabit his character and personify them to boot. But he does this because he feels inferior to his peers more than he enjoys it.
In a past interview withThe Guardian, theThor: Love and Thunderstar talked about why he’s so keen on preparing for all of his roles through method acting. He says that due to him wanting every aspect of his character portrayal to be perfect, he needs to get into their minds to make it work. Unlike stars such as Daniel Day-Lewis and Robert DeNiro, he cannot just flip a switch with his method acting, which is why he ventures deep into the art to bring a role to life. He said:

“There is a much easier way, but I can’t do it. I don’t know if it’s because I don’t have any training. I see actors who can just be themselves and then switch and give these really incredible performances, and then switch back to being themselves. I find I start laughing because I’m too aware that it’s still me. So I attempt to get as distant as possible. Otherwise, I can’t do it.”
Although he may put his mental and physical well-being at risk because of his choice to method act, the sacrifices are well worth the result he gets at the end.

Which Films Has Christian Bale Method Acted In?
Coming to his most iconic role inAmerican Psycho, the star was pushing himself so much during the shoot that the writer of the original novel had to stop him. Author Bret Easton Ellis said that when he went out for dinner with the star, he was still in character, so much so that he had to ask him to stop.
But by far one of the most borderline terrifying examples of his method of acting came when he lost almost 62 pounds of weight for his role inThe Machinist. Towards the end, the star looked like nothing more than a walking skeleton with flesh attached to it.
