Zack Snyder’s films, such as those in the DCEU, are known for their audacity and visual splendor. Nonetheless, Snyder had a chance to enter the legendaryStar Warsuniverse before he got involved with superheroes.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Snyder said that his upcoming film,Rebel Moon, was originally intended to be aStar Warsfilm. Zack Snyder’s one requirement made it impossible to work within the framework of the established franchise, despite widespread interest in the idea. So, the story ofRebel Moonexpanded into a multi-part original science fiction epic.
Zack Snyder’s Manifest Nod to the Greats
Akira Kurosawa’s body of work heavily influenced Snyder’s original concept for aStar Warsfilm. He wanted to write a story like Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai, only in space. Snyder thought it would be interesting to make aStar Warsfilm that explicitly acknowledged George Lucas’s debt to Akira Kurosawa’s works, calling it“a big ask.”But that was only the start of the difficulties that lay ahead.
“I knew it was a big ask, to be honest. But the deeper I got into it, I realised it was probably never going to be what I wanted.”

During post-production onMan of Steel, Zack Snyder approached Lucasfilm with his idea for aStar Warsfilm. The sale of Lucasfilm to Disney had just closed, creating exciting new opportunities for the long-running series.

Snyder viewed this as a way to maintain his artistic independence while pursuing his vision within theStar Warscanon. The producer proposed a darker, R-rated tone and stated his desire to work on his own story apart from existing characters, which was met with significant resistance.
“The sale [of Lucasfilm to Disney] had just happened. There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.’ And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter.”

The biggest challenge was meeting Snyder’s one requirement thatRebel Moonbe a self-contained story that doesn’t involve any of the canonStar Warscharacters. While his ideas were consistent with those that informed the firstStar Warsmovies, they did not follow canon.
