Mark Wahlberg surprised everyone when he revealed he is interested in being the torchbearer for Robert Downey Jr’s iconic Iron Man when he eventually decides to retire, way back in 2013. Wahlberg isn’t necessarily the first person that pops up in someone’s head when they think about superhero movies, especially not Iron Man. There is no doubt that the role is by far one of the most iconic ones to ever exist.

But that does not mean the actor will not try to pursue his hopes and dreams of being the Marvel superhero. But with time it seems that the longing withered. Now whether it’s a‘sour grapes’situation or the actor indeed has come to an understanding of what is best suited for him, only the internet can judge.

Mark Wahlberg Wanted to Become the Next Iron Man
Superhero movies are all the rage right now, andMark Wahlbergwas trying to be a part of the hype train since the beginning. Back in 2013, while doing a press tour for the movie2 Gunswith his co-starDenzel Washington, the actor expressed his lifelong dream to become Marvel’s next big thing, specifically, Iron Man.
“I would like to take over the ‘Iron Man’ franchise for Robert Downey,–[but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked.”

But to the actor’s disappointment, he wasn’t approached by anyone till then. He then revealed that he was in talks for playing the loyal sidekick to Batman, Robin for the movieBatman Forever, but then expressed his gratitude for dodging a bullet after the movie’s horrific box-office performance was revealed. He said,
“Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in ‘Batman [Forever]’,—Somebody dodged a bullet!”

Although he was eager to play a superhero, there was one thing he could not make peace with, which was the spandex costume and cape one has to wear to look the part. He wanted to play a real human being, minus the funky wardrobe, that is what attracted him to play Iron Man the most.

Why Mark Wahlberg Will Never Do a Superhero Movie
It was rumored some years back, that the MCU’s big boss,Kevin Feigehad been eyeing Walhberg to incorporate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although no definite project was set, it was speculated that the actor’s dream could finally be coming true. But despite the love he has for superhero movies, he could not convince himself to wear the“silly”looking costumes. He said,
“It’s just that for me, personally, as an actor, I would have a really hard time walking out of my trailer with a cape on, and a spandex suit.”
TheFather Stuactor thinks he either has to get offered the role of a ‘non-super’ hero, who has a significant part in the hero’s journey, or a superhero minus the elaborate wardrobe. Thus, the actor has since then agreed to wait patiently for the right role to fall into his lap. Although his future as Iron Man seems bleak, people are rooting for him.
