They started dating soon after and also worked together in the filmEdward Scissorhands. And after dating for only five months, Depp proposed to her for marriage. The actress was over the moon, as he was her first true love.
According toThe Lone Rangeractor, he was smitten with Ryder,
“There’s been nothing in my 27 years that’s comparable to the feeling I have with Winona. When you find the one who’s really it, there’s no mistaking it.”
Johnny Depp was sure that she was the one for him, hence he got “Winona Forever” tattooed on his arm. He shared in an unauthorized biography,
“I love Winona. I’m going to love her forever. Putting her on my arm solidified it. The truth is very powerful. Believe me. This is not something I took lightly.”
However, the actors called it quits by 1993 as the duo could not handle the excessive paparazzi. Depp told theLA Times,
“It’s very hard to have a personal life in this town. In my relationship with Winona, it was my mistake to be as open as we were, but I thought if we were honest, it would destroy that curiosity monster. Instead, it fed it, gave people license to feel they were part of it.”
The constant coverage of their relationship wasn’t worth it. They were not given a chance to behave like a normal couple. Hence, despite being in love, they decided to part ways.

Winona Ryder on breaking off her engagement with Johnny Depp
TheBeetlejuiceactress shared in an interview that she was heartbroken and depressed after her break-up with Depp. She could not handle her emotions well, as the actress was only 19. The actress toldCinema Blend,
“I was very depressed after breaking off my engagement with Johnny. I was embarrassingly dramatic at the time, but you have to remember I was only 19 years old.”
She added that her break-up was difficult as it was in the public eye,
“Breakups are hard for anybody, but it’s particularly tough when it’s being documented, and you see the person’s picture everywhere. Most people don’t have that added problem when they break up with someone.”
Winona Ryder also dated Matt Damon for a few years till 2000, and since 2011, she has been in a relationship with fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn.
