Some awards are best not won. The Golden Raspberry Awards – the ‘Razzies’ – bring to life this emotion and award only the worst in the showbiz industry. Mirroring the Academy Awards and normally held shortly before the Oscars themselves, the Razzies are a lighthearted award system that has separate categories for awards, like the Oscars, for worst lead and supporting actors and actresses, for worst films and sequels.
The 43rd Golden Raspberry Awards were held on Saturday, 11th march, 2023. The Razzies ended up awarding several actors, actresses, and movies which are actually in line for the Oscars, and even awarded themselves a Razzie, for the first time in their colorful history.
Razzies confer awards on Jared Leto, Tom Hanks, themselves
Runaway ‘victor’ at the Razzies was the fictionalized take on actress Marilyn Monroe that was the movieBlonde (2022), with it winning worst picture of the year, along with its director and writer Andrew Dominik winning worst screenplay of the year. The awarding committee called the movie “misogynistic, salacious, and fallacious” and added that it “shamelessly exploits the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.”

Tom Hanks won the worst supporting actor for his role inElvis (2022),depicting the great singer’s life, while the award for worst supporting actress was won by Adria Arjona forMorbius (2022). Morbiusalso picked up another Razzie in the form ofJared Letowinning the award of worst lead actor for a movie, pipping the likes of Tom Hanks in the role of Gepetto in Disney’sPinocchio.
Having originally nominated minor Ryan Kiera Armstrong, 12, for worst actress of the year, the Razzies took it upon themselves to remove her from the ballot and gave themselves the award, calling her nomination a minor blunder on their part, and winning the award ‘by a landslide’.
Some Razzie winners are actually in the running for the Oscars
BlondeandElvispicked up a few Razzies at the event on Saturday, but come the Oscars, happier times await the movies and their talent. Incidentally,Tom Hankswon the hilarious award for worst screen couple, with his award being titled “Tom Hanks & His Latex-Laden Face (and That Ludicrous Accent)”. Interestingly,Elvisis up for an Oscar in best makeup and hairstyling.

That is not where the list stops.Elvisis up for as many as eight Oscar nominations, whileBlondestar Ana de Armas is up for the best lead actress award at the Oscars later on. In a bright spot at the Razzies, Colin Farrell won the Razzie Redeemer Award, for having risen out of Razzie ashes and gone on to make it big at the Oscars. Farrell had previously been nominated for worst actor in 2004 forAlexander the Great, and now he is a frontrunner for the 2022 Oscar best actor forBanshees of Inisherin.
The 95th Academy awards will be held on 12th March at the Dolby Theatre.
