Johnny Depp Based Jack Sparrow On Real-Life Pirates, Keith Richards, And A Cartoon Skunk

In an interview uploaded by the Screen Slam YouTube channel,Johnny Deppwas asked about the people he drew from to play the lead character of Jack Sparrow. To this, the actor replied that he researched 18th-century pirates and also felt that Keith Richards was similar to Sparrow. He said:

“I started thinking about pirates in the 18th century. How they were kind of the rock and roll stars of that era. And I thought who is the coolest rock and roll character of all time, for me it’s Keith Richards. So I took that inspiration. It wasn’t a character study or imitation or anything like that. But a memory of how he is, how he behaves, there’s grace, elegance, and wisdom that I admire.”
