Joss Whedon ofBuffy the Vampire SlayerandTheAvengersfame is saying goodbye toBatgirl. The news comes nearly a year afterWarner Bros.set Whedon to write and direct the superheroine adventure in March 2017. Apparently Whedon couldn’t “crack the story.”

Whedon released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter thanking Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. CEO Toby Emmerich for the opportunity.
“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DCare such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?'”

Whedon’s departure will inevitability be linked to the disappointing critical and box office results ofJustice League. Whedon was brought in to oversee that film after Zack Snyder left due to his daughter’s tragic suicide.
It remains to be seen if WB will seek a replacement for Whedon or ifBatgirlwill be scrapped altogether. Hiring a female director could prove smart because of the female empowerment aspect.Wonder Womanfound much success with Patty Jenkins’ perspective.
