In typical MCU fashion Thor: Love and Thunder leaves us with not one, but two post credit scenes. If you’re still a bit confused on what they mean for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or just weren’t able to see them for yourself, then you’ve come to the right place.
Mid-Credits
The mid-credit scene brings us back to familiar enviornment, the Chapel of the Gods. Here we see Zeus’ furious, and still wounded from his encounter with Thor, in which the beloved Odinson not only stole his lighning bolt but threw it straight through his chest (with the help of Jane and Valkyrie). As he and of few of his squires nurse his wound, he begins to give a monlogue to someone, in which he states his vow to kill the God of Thunder. Before we can have much time to speculate who he’s talking to, the camera pans over to none other than Hercules, being played by Brett Goldstein. Hercules had almost the same introduction in the comics as well, first being introduced as a villain and later becoming a hero.
Post-Credit
After the mid-credit scene finishes and the credits start to roll, we are treated to another scene, one that may have a bit less of a practical implication on the MCU. The scene opens overlooking a beautiful sky, before panning down to the now deceased, Jane Foster. Jane died in battle, and as hinted many times previously in the film, she has now been sent to Valhalla, the asgardian afterlife. She is greeted by none other than Heimdall, who exclaims that she has now earned the right to live peacefully among the gods, which she accepts without hesitation. The screen then cuts to black as the word ‘THOR WILL RETURN’ appear on the screen.
So What Does This Mean For The Future of The MCU?
WIth the mid-credit scene leaving off on the note that it did, it doesn’t leave much room for speculation as the plan is stated quite clearly. It will definetly be a treat to see Thor and Hercules go toe-toe in a battle of the gods, but when that will happen, we don’t know.
As for the post-credits, I dont believe it has any major impolications on our current MCU. We have been presented with three afterlifes now (Ancestral Plane, Field of Reeds, Valhalla), and while I do believe something could be shaping for these after-lifes to come together in some way, I don’t believe it will be anytime soon. On the other hand, I do believe that we will be seeing Jane and Heimdall again in the future, although I’m not sure how far off we are from that. Idris Elba is a character you dont just bring back for no reason, and I think we may be having a party with the gods quite soon. As for the ‘THOR WILL RETURN” text, while it could be hinting at a retun of The MIghty Thor, Jane Foster, I think we can imply they are just letting us know our beloved Thor Odinson is here to stay.
