Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has finally arrived, and PlayStation 5 players can enjoy Miles’ and Peters’ journey across an expanded map within New York with unique superpowers. The game is a big leap from the last game, even though the overall campaign size is similar to its predecessor.

However, the questionable $70 price tag on a 15-17 hour campaign size has been worrisome to many. In contrast to these doubts, Insomniac’s creative director Bryan Intihar has made a statement regarding the price, assuring everyone that the experience is absolutely worth the money.

Is Spider-Man 2’s Price Justified?

In an interview withBBC, Bryan had some supportive remarks regarding the game’s hefty pricing:

For us, it really comes down to the experience we want to deliver with the quality we want to hit. Obviously, there’s a certain level of, ‘hey, someone’s going to spend this much money on a game’, so we want to give them the experience that’s worth it.

Bryan further commented how it’s the developers’ intent to verify that a player’s money is always worth it.

A reason around this conversation does come to recent releases areBaldur’s Gate 3andStarfield, which are in stark comparison when it comes to ‘length’. Both of these games are hundreds of hours in length, and let players explore entire landscapes and worlds that are unique to their playstyle and customization. Moreover,Starfieldwas a day-one access for Game Pass users, which made the argument fall in favour of its pricing.

In the case of other, more linear sub-genres like Souls-like games are usually meant to be long. Take for exampleLies of P,another day-one release for Game Pass, which is more than 30 hours’ worth of playtime even if you’re decent at difficult games like this one. And, if you’re someone who is playing a Souls-like for the first time, you’ll be spending a lot more hours learning the basics.

Regardless of the campaign or side-mission lengths, the quality is what truly matters for a positive gameplay experience. At least, that’s what Insomniac entails with the statements. From the reviews,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has been hitting all the right marks and makes for an enriching narrative overall.

Purely from a gameplay design perspective,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2creates a world that is meant to distract players from main quests. Between swinging and fighting, players are to get lost in experimenting with different suits and uncovering secrets the city holds. That alone becomes more than just ‘filler’ between important missions and story arcs.

How Different Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 From the Previous Game?

Unlike the previous game,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is exclusive to the PlayStation 5. This has been somewhat of an obvious choice given the detailed world, and how the hardware’s capabilities manage the game’s massive open-world and fast travelling without huge loading times. Furthermore, switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales is an experience that Insomniac created keeping uniqueness in mind.

Both of these superheroes, in their own right, have personalised abilities to experiment and manoeuvre the city of New York in the fastest and slickest ways possible. It’s not all gameplay though; the game’s 65 unlockable suits for both Spideys gives players to mix-and-match traits to create over 200 unique styles. Some of the suits are purely nostalgic and pay homage to retro aesthetic styles (such as the one designed by Alex Ross himself).

The game’s story is aimed at invoking a plethora of emotions from excitement and joy to grief and longing, as players meet different characters. There are some familiar faces like Mary Jane and Mr. Negative, while new anti-villains make their way into the narrative. Some of them are Venom, the Lizard and Kraven. However, what stands out is the awe-inspiring synergy between Miles and Peter. Especially when players themselves can live out the power fantasy of fighting crime as two playable superheroes.
