But as it turns out, not everything shown in the movie is real, as revealed by the Ex-CIA agent who compared the situations portrayed in the Cruise starrer spy films with the conditions faced by CIA agents in real life.

A former CIA intelligence officer and founder of Everyday Spy, Andrew Bustamante took out some time to compare the scenarios shown in the spy movie series with the situations actually faced by CIA agents in real life, and the results are enough to leave anyone flabbergasted.

Tom Cruise’s deadly cliff scene in a still from Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Among his other reviews for the spy movie series’ realistic approach,Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011),caught his eye in particular. Referring to the scene where Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt scales the Burj Khalifa and infiltrates the building using a laser glass cutter, Bustamante said,

“Yes, it could be done. But no a–hole would do that in broad daylight. A spy’s best friend is the concealment of night and the fact that he’s executing this operation in broad daylight in the United Arab Emirates. It’s just not accurate. It’s really important to understand that all espionage is illegal. What happens is your government sanctions you to carry out illegal acts. Ethan could very much be prosecuted by an Emirati judge of any neighboring ally country if they were to capture him engaged in any act of espionage on behalf of the United States.”

So, in simple words, if a CIA agent or an intelligence spy were doing this in real life, they along with their home country could get in some serious trouble. Sounds dangerous, and yet, Tom Cruise still did it.

Andrew Bustamante Calls Tom Cruise ‘A Real Man’ For His Deadly Stunt

Apart from criticizing the $694M spy movie for its God-tier inaccuracy, Andrew Bustamante was all praise forTom Cruisefor all the stunts he performed himself for the movie. Talking about his motorcycle stunt scene inMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,he said,

“This is why nobody talks sh-t about Mission: Impossible. You know, Tom Cruise did that stunt and he didn’t just do it once. He did it multiple times to get everything right. CIA teaches us how to ride a number of vehicles and the idea that you would drive a perfectly good motorcycle off a cliff, that’s not something we’re trained to do. And then be able to deploy a parachute and essentially base jump from a motorcycle?! The bad-a–ery is just thick and it’s just awesome. I would give this a 10. That is a real man riding a real motorcycle off of a real ramp into… [laughs] into the air.”

He also went ahead to reveal how no secret intelligence spy like Ethan Hunt exists in real life, referring to all the stunts and dangerous adventures faced by Tom Cruise in the movie, claiming that “a lucky CIA career will have one moment of excitement that even comes close to what Ethan does”in real life.
