Chris Pratt’sThe Super Mario Bros. Moviehas earned a total of $94.9 million (13.53 billion yen) in Japan, butDetective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine,which happens to be the 26th film in the mystery thriller anime series has smashed its rival as it earned $105.8 million.
Pratt’s movie is the 20th highest-earning film of all time in Japan and the highest-earning Universal Pictures in Japan. However, despite immense success in Western countries the animated film struggled to have a decent box office record in Japan.

Before shattering box office records in the USA,The Super Mario Bros. Moviesfaced immense online backlash from fans. Naturally, Chris Pratt was immensely nervous as he had been cast for the iconic role, and he was worried about how the movie would turn out to be. Pratt had confessed how nervous he was and had doubts about how the finished movie would turn out to be.
During an exclusive interview with ET, theJurassic World: Fallen Kingdomactor stated his fears and how he got emotional watching the film for the first time.
“There had been a lot of backlash and people talking about the casting. And I was like, “Oh, man. I hope it’s good.” And then it’s so good. It was just such a relief. I was as nervous as everybody else that this was going to get screwed up and I was grateful that it didn’t.”
The project was immensely important for Pratt because as a kid, the actor had played Mario games for“probably a thousand hours,”if not more. Fittingly, when theGuardians of the Galaxyactor would play the game with his siblings, he would choose the Italian Plumber. Hence, it was immensely important to make sure that people would love his performance in the animated movie.
