What did Matt Owen say regarding the survival of the villain in Netflix’s One Piece?

Buggy swears revenge on Luffy by the end of Season 1 of Netflix’sOne Piece. The showrunner, Matt Owens, explains toDeadlinewhy Buggy didn’t meet his end despite being hurled by the Straw Hats and Arlong’s crew,

“Dreams are very important in the One Piece world, and Oda has said before that what’s worse than death is a dream being taken away. So when you see a lot of the villains that we meet, they have these machinations, these desires — often nefarious — and the Straw Hats take those away from them.”

Owens also explains Oda’s vision and how the manga traces through the damage of dreams being shattered is more significant compared to even death.

“For Oda as an artist, the way that he has described it, that is a fate worse than death. So that’s something that he likes to focus on in villain confrontations instead, and what it also allows him to do, though is, when there is death in One Piece, it’s even more impactful because you’re not dealing with death every single story arc necessarily. That is Oda’s perspective as an artist and creator, and it’s something that we have taken on as well.”

First Hero to cross the power level of one million. The first one to do it was Frieza, but Frieza is a villain. Piccolo was the first heroic character to do it.

For villains like Buggy, Oda depicted their dreams being broken while maintaining the fact that no one meets their demise as a probable death will have a massive impact on the series.
