Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 filmKick-Assis a dark comedy superhero film based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $96 million worldwide. It was praised for its action, humor, and performances.

The film is considered to be one of the best superhero films of all time. However, it at first failed to grab the attention of Hollywood. Vaughn during a panel at New York Comic Con said that he could not get any distribution.

At First Hollywood Said No, Later It Became One of the Best in this Genre
Matthew Vaughn, theKingsmanDirector madeKick-Assin 2010 which is a subversive and satirical take on the superhero genre. It is a violent and profane film, but it is also funny and heartwarming.Nicolas Cageplayed the role of Big Daddy in this film.
Recalling how difficult it was for him to get any distributor for the movie, the director said (ViaThe Hollywood Reporter):

“It was scary because then we couldn’t get any distribution when finished because my agent at the time said, you know, it’s not really intelligent if everybody in Hollywood says no, don’t go make it because that doesn’t mean they’re gonna buy it”
Adding how Hollywood took a U-turn and thought of the film seriously, he said:

“Thank God for Hall H, because we showed the movie, or they showed clips of the movie, after Avatar — so I really thought it was a screw. The fans went so crazy that the sheep of Hollywood decided that maybe there was something in here that the fans might like. So they went for it.”
During the panel discussion, he also gave insights into Hollywood politics, machines, and why he left his job.

Matthew Vaughn Plans to Reboot theKick-AssFranchise
Kick-Assspawned a sequel,Kick-Ass 2, in 2013. And now, director Matthew Vaughn plans to go for aKick-Assreboot. Speaking during a New York Comic Con panel, Vaughn revealed that a reboot is in the works.
“Kick-Ass sort of changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is at that time. So we’ll be doing it again.”
“None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we’d like to have them back after the reboot. I can’t really talk about it, but it’s fun!”
The originalKick-Assmovie starsAaron Taylor-Johnsonas Dave Lizewski, an average teenager who decides to become a real-life superhero, despite having no powers, training, or meaningful reason.
