There’s no doubt the HBO series is one of the most popular television shows of all time. But there’s no shortage of fans who still can’t get over how the showrunners concluded Season 8 and would like to find some relief by following the development of new characters and storylines from George R.R. Martin’s world of dragons through spin-off shows. However, HBO is wary of giving the green light to every idea surroundingGame of Thrones.

What HBO CEO Said About Game of Thrones Spin-off Plans Amid Rumors of a Series on Jon Snow

House of the Dragon, the series which is set 200 years before the events ofGame of Thrones, has received very promising reactions from fans, prompting HBO to quickly renew it for Season 2.

Many fans see theHODas just the start in a potentially very long line ofGame of Thronesspin-offs. However, HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys has rained on their parade by confirming that the reported spinoff centered onKit Harington‘s Jon Snow is yet to get an official nod from the network.

Kit Harington in Game Of Thrones also starred in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

For now, the only new series that the network has ordered isA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight –a title based onGeorge R.R. Martin’s trio ofDunk and Eggnovellas. Bloys revealed (viaTV Line):

“We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring. I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.”

For now, it seems fans will have to make do with the golden days of dragons rather than the snowy walls of the North with Jon Snow at the helm. And this might not be the worst thing.

Why HBO’s Reluctance for Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow Spin-off Makes Sense

One of the biggest issues fans found withGame of Thrones’conclusion was that the series finale didn’t come from Martin’sA Song of Ice and Firenovel series as the author’s work still remains unfinished. Considering this, it’s also easy to guess the author hasn’t produced any original material on the life of Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen.

As such it would be unwise to move ahead with half-baked plans that don’t involve Martin’s ideas. Some fans on social media seem to think the same.

HBO struck gold with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. It renewed good will for the franchise that many of us never expected to have again. The absolute worst thing HBO could do is abuse our good will by releasing half a dozen other half-baked spin offs with it.

Why don’t they just do series based on the books that are finished like house of the dragons

— Kami Anime S (@KamiAnimess)July 05, 2025

Yeah let’s keep it that way and just focus on House of the Dragon! Quality > Quantity

— MovieGainz (@MovieGainz)July 01, 2025

Good they ruined it with that ending

Another thing that HBO needs to keep in mind before deciding to churn out multiple spin-offs at once is the recent underwhelming performance of spin-offs based on Marvel Comics characters. Like superhero fatigue, we might witness dragon fatigue if the producers go overboard with GOT-inspired content.
