Xbox Game Pass saw no substantial growth in 2022. That’s according to boss Phil Spencer and comes from the recently leaked documents that formed part of the FTC Trial.

And in a rather damning reveal of the business, it shows that ever since the announcement of the Activision Blizzard deal last year, there no was no substantial growth over an 8 to 9-month period. Subscription numbers remained at a steady 25 million for that designated period.
The Growth of Xbox Game Pass
This being said it isn’t entirely unexpected, as the company acknowledged there was a lack of AAA content in 2022. And according to Xbox Senior Marketing Director Craig McNary’sLinkedInpage, it states the Xbox Game Pass service has over 30 million users as of August 2023.

It will be interesting to see how those numbers are reflected currently, given the release ofStarfield. Could there be a significant increase in the reported 30 million users as stated by Craig McNary?
You would think so, given that this is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year. Taking into account the figures in terms of console sales which are reportedhere, we can only assume there is a marked increase in last year’s figures for Xbox Game Pass.

And given the most recent development, could we see numbers increase further? Since Xbox Gold Live has now been rebranded as Xbox Game Pass Core, and reported 60 million members, it may be difficult to calculate an actual total.
But if the figures from XGPC are considered as part of the numbers for Xbox Game Pass then they will be substantially greater than the reported 30 million that McNary stated in August.

When the news broke, many on Social Media had differing views on what this meant for the company moving forward:

” All of these leaks and information, it feels like this is the beginning of their downfall. I don’t think they can up their business until 2027 with these mails leaked and plans ahead.
I guess Xbox will soon be a GamePass PC brand that also publishes their games on PS & Nintendo” –@GameSkrooge
“It’s also just going to get more expensive. Subscription fatigue is setting in for people.” –@VegasAceVII
“Maybe if they added some serious titles it would grow” –@boigercat
There’s certainly some varying takes on Xbox Game Pass and what some fans see as the future of the company. And given the recent leaked documents, many have jumped on the bandwagon of saying the company is on a downward spiral.
One thing that hasn’t been taken into account, however, is how these numbers will be reflected when the Activision Blizzard games finally land for Game Pass.
